The Museum, therefore, is the chief resource of the visual arts for a large and expanding population. Accordingly, the Museum has felt the responsibleness of developing as a general fine art museum of the highest quotient. It is our aim to cover with our collections and exhibitions the unabridged history of man's creative endeavor. We also accept the obligation of interpreting our collections and exhibitions to visitors through catalogs, guided tours, children's classes and special lectures.

Probably no museum grows evenly, and, in spite of our well-rounded ambitions, the special interests of patrons and directors have resulted in certain strengths and weaknesses in our permanent collection. Of all the museums on the Westward Coast, probably none tin boast better collections of Greek and Roman sculpture and American painting. The classical antiquities came to the Museum as an indefinite loan from Wright Ludington, whose generosity has repeatedly enriched almost every attribute of the Museum's collections. The strong American drove is primarily the gift of Mrs. Sterling Morton, whose married man gave the wing in which it is housed presently earlier his untimely expiry in 1961. Many others accept contributed to the collections, and in that location is now significant material from most historical periods.
